I’m not a baker, as will become abundantly clear shortly, but I think there’s an example from baking that illustrates the mix of story ingredients that go into the writer’s voice.
You can take flour, milk, butter, and eggs, take them all and mix them into a batter to bake a cake.
Or you can take those same ingredients, leave out the butter, and make pancakes.
Same ingredients again, add some sugar, and make cookies.
Replace the milk with water, add a little yeast, and you’ve got bread.
Some products might require a leavening agent like baking soda. Some might call for a little bit of salt. Some might need more sugar, less sugar, or no sugar.
But the main ingredients are all the same.
The amount of each ingredient will change. How you treat those ingredients will change. A thin, runny batter or a thick dough? Do you mix them all together lightly or thoroughly blend them? Do you set the dough aside to rise or immediately pour the batter into a baking dis…
